Lisa Hayashi, CMO of SafeGuard Cyber, recently had the privilege of hosting Elle Johns, the Global Cybersecurity Program Manager at Gong.io, on the Vision & Voice coffee chat. Elle shared her journey to the top of one of the most innovative AI technology companies and provided insights into managing cybersecurity in a fast-paced startup environment.

For those unfamiliar, Gong.io is at the forefront of the AI revolution, harnessing advanced technology to reshape sales strategies and customer interactions. As they grow, ensuring robust cybersecurity measures are critical, and Elle has been instrumental in leading this charge.

One of the major takeaways from the chat was Elle’s program management approach that is modeled after the SMEAC framework (complements of the USMC) – Situation, Mission, Execution, Administration, and Command & Signal – Elle leverages this framework to manage complex projects and initiatives at Gong. The framework emphasizes a systematic approach to planning, executing, and communicating about a project.

Understanding the SMEC Framework:

  • Situation: Recognizing the current scenario, understanding the challenges, and providing a contextual background for the project.
  • Mission: This step ensures the project's purpose and objectives are clear. It answers the crucial questions – who, what, where, when, and why.
  • Execution: It involves identifying all the tasks essential for the project, delving deep into the technical aspects, and setting possible timelines.
  • Administration: Focuses on the admin side – from deciding on stakeholders, assigning responsibilities, to determining reporting structures.
  • Communication, Command & Signal: Effective communication is paramount. This phase ensures all stakeholders are in the loop and maintains an oversight mechanism to direct the project's trajectory.

Elle highlighted that each company, especially startups, has its unique challenges and strengths. What works for one might not work for another. That's where the SMEAC framework shines. It's adaptable, ensuring that while the core principles remain, the implementation can be tailored to fit a company's specific needs.

Especially interesting was Elle's reflection on Gong's hyper-growth. "Scaling a company from virtually no process to add process is incredibly challenging" Elle commented. "And even now, as we’re in series D, we are still learning and adapting. Not one company operates in the same way, especially in the AI space."

When asked about the challenges of expanding into international markets like Europe and Asia, Elle spoke about the necessity of understanding local regulations, certifications, and compliance requirements. "For instance," she remarked, "as we look toward the Asian market, we're deeply researching certifications like those in Singapore. It's paramount for ensuring our platform is trusted and compliant."

Concluding the chat, Elle spoke of her pride in Gong's commitment to diversity. "50% of the women in security at Gong hold a leadership position and 33% of the leadership team at Gong are women," she shared, "reflecting the diversity of thought and approach we bring to our work every day."

In these times when cybersecurity is paramount, Elle's insights and Gong's approach offer valuable lessons for startups and established businesses alike. Their commitment to innovative thinking, adaptability, and diversity is a roadmap for success in today's dynamic business landscape.
